Hipower Happenings
June was an amazing month for Hipower members. Here are some of the ways our members were innovators and champions for change, bringing others together for common purpose.
Jan Kang Hosts WCGN 10th Anniversary
The Women’s General Counsel Network, which connects approximately 800 female lawyers in person and online, celebrated its 10th anniversary in June. More than 200 people gathered at GoPro’s San Mateo, California, office—where WGCN advisory council member Eve Saltman leads the legal team—to network and reflect on the group’s decade of growth.
Jan Kang, WGCN founder and chief legal officer of Alphabet’s cybersecurity subsidiary Chronicle, described how the idea for WGCN was born after another female lawyer lamented about the “old boys’ network” of most GC groups. “We really needed something focused on women,” Kang said. “The seed was planted.” Over the next several years Jan diligently grew the network, inviting small groups of women to dinner, cold calling, approaching women at conferences and reaching out to her network to find interested lawyers. Over time, Jan’s hard work paid began to build results and there are now members from other countries and several U.S. states.
The 10th anniversary celebration raised more than $180,000 for Legal Momentum, a legal advocacy group for women, surpassing its goal of $125,000.
Julia Wilson Brings Down the House at OneJustice Fundraiser
At their annual fundraising event, “Opening Doors to Justice,” OneJustice’s CEO Julia Wilson brought the ballroom to silence with her powerful speech—even though the Warriors were playing a tense finals game! (We are awaiting video and will share it as soon as we can. In the meantime, you can watch Julia’s TedTalk here.)
Every year, the OneJustice network comes together to celebrate the life-changing legal help the network brings to immigrants, survivors of domestic violence, returning members to society, and their families throughout California. The Opening the Doors to Justice celebration honors companies and individuals who have worked tirelessly to promote access to justice throughout the state. Opening Doors to Justice awardees are companies or individuals who embody a commitment to OneJustice’s mission of transforming California’s legal aid system. Julie Chávez Rodríguez, former State Director and Senior Adviser for Senator Kamala Harris, was the keynote speaker for the 2019 event.
